ADDIS ABABA & HARAR, ETHIOPIA, FEBRUARY 2010
This amazing trip began with a music lesson to explain the structure of Ethiopian music, the likes of Flea, Nick Zinner and Alex Kapranos listening intently as they immersed themselves in the culture of their hosts. Rachel Unthank later demonstrated north-eastern culture with a spot of clog-dancing, leaving a shattered table in a nightclub. Others joining Africa Express included Bashy, Bullion, Kano, Josh Klinghoffer, Joan Wasser and Remi Kabaka. One consequence was the track ‘Ethiopia’ on the Red Hot Chili Peppers album ‘I’m With You’, inspired by Flea’s experiences.
