Africa Express, the collective of African and Western musicians, is filling a train with dozens of guest artists and taking it on a musical adventure across mainland Britain this September, produced in association with the Barbican as part of London 2012 Festival.

Following acclaimed outings in the UK, France, Spain and Nigeria, Africa Express will become ‘The Africa Express’, departing London on 2nd September for a unique artistic journey through England, Scotland and Wales.

As well as scheduled concerts in Middlesbrough, Glasgow, Manchester, Cardiff and Bristol, there will be pop-up performances at railway stations, schools, factories, offices, shopping centres and homes. The train itself will include a customized music carriage, with artists creating new material along the route, culminating in the train’s arrival back into King’s Cross ahead of a finale concert in brand new outdoor London venue Granary Square on 8th September.

As with every Africa Express happening, events will be unrehearsed and unapologetic.

Participating artists include musical legends, emerging new artists, vocalists, DJs and producers from Africa and the West including Amadou & Mariam, Damon Albarn, Rokia Traoré, Kano, Baloji, Charli XCX, Fatoumata Diawara, Noisettes,  Jupiter & Okwess International, Jack Steadman (Bombay Bicycle Club), Baaba Maal, Bassekou Kouyate and Nick Zinner of the Yeah Yeah Yeahs  - with lots more guests to be announced closer to the time.

There will be few single concerts that ever have this many truly incredible moments.’ Mojo
